伯納赫曼 1911年6月29日 出生於紐約市。他的父母Abraham 和 Ida 很鼓勵他在藝術方面的興趣 。 Herrmann 1927年時在 DeWitt Clinton 中學 開始接受正規的音樂教育(Jerome Moross - 錦繡大地作者， 也是他的同班同學)。在紐約大學(NYU)時和 Philip James 學習作曲，和Albert Stoessel 學習指揮，並且在茱利亞學院待過兩年 ，但之後又回到NYU練習進階作曲及管絃編制。年輕時他接觸過Copland (柯普蘭)、Gershwin 和 Elgar 的音樂 ，但影響其風格更甚者為華格納 、馬勒 、德步西，以及拉威爾。
1937年赫曼進入CBS Radio，在教育部門工作；但其最大的興趣仍在於指揮，隨後即轉任CBS交響樂團指揮，在這期間也認識了導演Orson Welles。隨Welles 的 Mercury Theatre Playhouse group 轉移到好萊烏後，Herrmann 寫了清唱劇(cantata) "Moby Dick (白鯨記， 1938)"以及歌劇咆哮山莊。1941年 Orson 請他為大國民(Citizen Kane)譜寫配樂，從此之後聲名大噪。
當時二十世紀福斯的錄音室音樂指導 Alfred Newman (阿佛列德紐曼，湯瑪斯紐曼的父親) 僱用他為 Jane Eyre (簡愛，1943)、Hangover Square (1945)、Anna and the King of Siam (1946)、The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (幽靈與未亡人， 1947)、The Day the Earth Stood Still (地球末日記，1951) 等電影配樂。
五零年代赫曼結識了驚悚電影大師 Hitchcock (希區考克)，這對黃金組合共同創作出許多著名的作品，包括：The Trouble with Harry (怪屍案，1955)、The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)、Vertigo (迷魂記，1958)、North by Northwest (北西北，1959)、Psycho (驚魂記， 1960 - 經典中的經典，可以拱起來拜了)、Marnie (艷賊，1964) 等等。直到1966年，在他們最後一次合作的作品 "Torn Curtain" 中，因為彼此的看法及意見分歧而使他們的合作生涯就這樣結束，而他的音樂也被棄置不用，改由John Addison出任。儘管如此，這對搭當仍在影迷和樂迷心目中，留下不可磨滅的地位；這樣的結合也成為日後的經典示範。
赫曼的出眾才能也為之帶來其他的合作對象，像是一些新一代的導演包括 François Truffaut, Brian DePalma, Larry Cohen 和 Martin Scorsese。
1975年他來到了加州錄製 "Taxi Driver 計程車司機" 的配樂，頭一天演奏家們都前來和赫曼打聲招呼，因為這是他多年以來第一次回到這裡。12月23日，終於完成了每一個音符的錄音，回到飯店和他妻子共進晚餐後，在睡眠中長逝。導演 Martin Scorsese 說道：
"Working with Bernard Herrmann was one of the most satisfying experiences that I've ever had in pictures. The day after he died the press called me and asked for a comment, and I still feel the same way that I did then: There was no one who could even come near him."
"I felt that music on the screen can seek out and intensify the inner thoughts of the characters. It can invest a scene with terror, grandeur, gaiety or misery. It can propel narrative swiftly forward, of slow it down. It often lifts mere dialogue into the realm of poetry. Finally, it is the communicating link between the screen and the audience, reaching out and enveloping all into one single experience"
